DUI Conviction: How Does It Affect Your Auto Insurance?
Reader’s Question:
I know that a DUI conviction can be pretty bad here in New York. I’m just curious how is it gonna affect my auto insurance rates? And what penalties does a DUI offense get?

DUI conviction may not only be pretty bad in New York Roger, that’s the worst nightmare any driver could ever have. And I meant any driver, not only here in New York.
And getting a DUI conviction would surely increase your auto insurance rates more than what you can imagine. The insurance rates could double, or even triple, or worst could even quadruple. And what’s even worse is that this has a long term effect on your auto insurance rate. You may be paying for expensive insurance rates for a couple of years after your conviction. And honestly with a conviction like DUI, you may even find it hard to get an auto insurance provider willing to insure. That’s why insurance rates for drivers with a DUI offense came in pricey.
As to DUI penalties for first time offenders this includes:
- Fine of $500 to $1,000
- Jail time of up to one year
- License suspension for a period of six months
I would suggest that’s its’ best not to be involved in any drunk driving activities. It does not only save you money on your insurance premiums but would save a lot of lives. So drive safe!
