Reader’s Question:

How can you avoid being categorized as high risk driver?

Nanne

New York City NY

Here are some of the ways to avoid being considered as high risk motorist by car insurance companies.

1. If you are still a student, be a good student as this can merit you a discount. Having attended a defensive driving class can help you minimize your insurance rate.

Get a modest car loaded with safety devices. This will actually apply to all motorists, high risk or not.

2. Address or location can also contribute to your risk factor. If you reside in a place where car theft is high, heavy traffic is a daily occurrence, road accidents are frequent, then this will make you a high-risk candidate.

3. People with bad credit history can always find ways to get out being considered as high risk by:

  • Pay bills on time.
  • Close those credit card accounts with very high interest rates.
  • If you do not have also any credit, get one but be a responsible creditor. Having no credit history can be a strike against you. Credit history is one way to prove your being a responsible person.

4. The SR22 insurance can be very expensive. This is something you should avoid. To avoid this:

  • Never drive under influence (DUI) of alcohol or illegal drugs.
  • No to reckless driving.
  • Never forget to bring your car insurance with you when you drive. Or, never forget to renew your policy.

Reader’s Question:

What are the things I need to know before buying car insurance for female drivers here in New York. Is it really cheaper?

Christine

New York City NY

You’re right Christine. Compared to their male counterparts, car car insurance for femaleinsurance for female applicants are cheaper. At the top of my head, I can give you two main reasons why this is so and it’s not entirely because women are better drivers. Now I have nothing against women okay?

The first reason why women are offered lower rates is because they are careful drivers. Being careful means being involved less in accidents and getting few tickets for traffic violations. Women also have lower mileage.

The second reason is that women generally make less expensive claims. Or you can argue that women give the correct estimates. Men on the other hand not only make more claims but may give bloated amounts of said claims. Having expensive claims not only wastes the company’s time confirming it but also increases your chances of not getting it

Because of the low rates of car insurance for female, some men have used this to their advantage instead of complaining about it. Some will want to be named as a driver in their wife or girlfriend’s insurance effectively giving them a chance to pay for low premiums than buying an insurance of their own. If you are planning to do this, be aware that certain insurance companies have policies that will specifically cover women drivers only. To be safe, ask your agent before even buying a policy geared for females.

As mentioned earlier, female drivers have been statistically shown to be involved in fewer accidents than men. Which means that female drivers have bigger chances of getting a no claims bonus. This is what an insurance company will give if you remain accident free or claims free after a certain number of years. Again ask your New York car insurance agent if your policy has this provision and what the terms are.

Presently there are studies that claim women drivers are starting become not only more aggressive behind the wheel but more prone to road rage. Female drivers have also been found to drive longer distances. Until this data is officially recognized by the government, then rest assured car insurance for female automobile drivers will continue to have low rates.
